NXNE is going to be nuts this year, and here at TWM we are thrilled with our lineups. At Rancho Relaxo we are offering you programming for four nights, with extended last call to 4 AM + an early start with the first band on at 8 PM.

That means on Thurs/Fri/Sat we are offering up 24 bands.

I’m exhausted just thinking about it.

Who:

OLD WORLD VULTURE: (http://www.myspace.com/oldworldvulturemusic)

NXNE officially kicks off with a band that has been working very hard lately and making waves with their debut release, Old World Vulture. They’ve garnered comparisons to bands like Explosions in the Sky, Holy Fuck and basically every instrumental post-rock band you can find. People forget to mention one thing about Old World Vulture: while it is easy to compare them to bands of a similar ilk, OWV are doing something of their own, and doing as well or better than anyone out there right now.

THE CUNNINGHAMS: (http://www.myspace.com/thecunninghamsband)

Then we have the Cunninghams, and it’s been a while since they played the Ranch. The Cunninghams play tight indie-rock with a strong hint of Britpop mixed in. They’ve been going strong for a few years now and have had some big shows along the way. It’ll be nice to have them back.

THE SEEDY SEEDS: (http://www.myspace.com/theseedyseeds)

Then it is The Seedy Seeds from Cincinnati. In my 3+ years booking, I’ve actually never booked a band from there before. I’m really excited for the Seedy Seeds to come down as I’ve been listening to them and reading press about them for over a year now.

Here is a description from the band’s bio: “The Seedy Seeds don’t know you, but they already like you. With a completely original sound and presentation, including banjo, accordion and toy keyboard beats, The Seedy Seeds create positive, melodic, danceable Indie music that is equally at home alongside pop-punk, alt-country, and lo-fi.”

JANE’S PARTY: (http://www.myspace.com/janespartyband)

These guys are a Toronto band I’ve been wanting to put on a show with for several months now. NXNE finally makes it happen. They play finely-tuned, well thought out, jangly indie-pop. I dig it a lot. Here’s a press clip: “There are elements of Joel Plaskett, Skydiggers, and even mid-period Wilco in this Toronto band’s sparkling acoustic pop…” — John Sakamoto, The Toronto Star

MAKE ME YOUNG: (http://www.myspace.com/makemeyoung)

These guys/gal are proof that you don’t need to pick one — or even two — genres to go with. Make Me Young is a band that is sometimes dance-rock, sometimes hard rock, other times noise, blending that all together to create a sound and a live show unlike anything else going on in the Toronto scene right now. They’ve also recently released a stellar debut album.

CORDUROY: (http://www.myspace.com/thebandcorduroy)

This is a band that has transformed multiple times in the few years I’ve known them. Once more of a straight forward rock/pop band, last I saw them they had changed considerably. Now, with some new songs on MySpace, they appear to have revamped one more time. The new songs have a darker, more anthemic feel to them, even hints of Arcade Fire. This is exciting.

RESPLANDOR: (http://www.myspace.com/resplandorperu)

This band is from Peru. That immediately make them cool, I think. What does a band from Peru even sound like? In this case, they sound shoegazey with a fair amount of Britpop mixed in. Breathy vocals, slow builds, huge peaks and valleys. Perhaps the best band out of Peru ever? Who knows.

ONE MORE BAND TBA at 3 AM

Where: Rancho Relaxo (300 College)

When: Thursday June 17th doors at 7:30 music at 8:00

How Much: $TBA or free with bracelet or pass.
